The Genetics of Asthma – Can asthma be inherited?
A friend of mine seemed perfectly healthy except for one thing – she can not run as fast as the rest of school team during track practice because after only few minutes, she has to sit down on the bench and relax – too much running can cause her chest to tighten and she will have difficulty in breathing. My friend has asthma. Her mom has asthma too, but her father is isn’t, in fact her dad runs in the marathon. She frequently asks me if she got her condition from her mother. And I replied with a yes, Asthma is hereditary. Too bad she didn’t inherit the health qualities of her father since my friend likes to run.
Going back, the simple and short answer to my question would be the word Yes. Asthma has a very large tendency to be passed on thru genetics and can be inherited. If your mother of your father suffer from asthma, they chances are you are very likely to experience the symptoms of asthma. Also, even if your parents don’t have asthma but your grandmother does, you are very likely to have asthma as well. Worse, if both your parents and your grandparents have asthma, they have given you love and asthma at the same time.
There have been a lot of studies being done to really determine if asthma is indeed hereditary. One of these studies includes a study on twins. Take identical twins for example. If one of them, one of the identical twins has asthma, the other twin will also have asthma. Why? Since identical twins are very likely to share the similar and almost the same genetic code or as the experts say genetic information, if one of the two identical has asthma, the other has asthma as well.
Like many different and other diseases out there, asthma can develop as a result of how a person’s genes are made of. If the genes of your parents have asthma written all over it, then the genes that they will pass on to you will carry the name asthma, which you can also carry on to your children. Especially when not treated properly, asthma can be passed on from generations to generations, from one dynasty to another. If asthma is present on your parents’ genes, do not be surprised if your chest tightens sometimes and have difficulties in breathing. If you have the genes and you vacuum under your bed and have a habit of resting and reading a book under a Birch tree, then your condition may transform from mild and moderate to worse. Aside form the genes and heredity; asthma can also be developed by the environment.
In all of these, it is best to say that asthma can develop party because of the genes and heredity, and the other part because of exposure to a certain type of environment. If the partition is fifty-fifty or sixty-forty, no ones for sure. But the doctors are working on it, that’s for sure. For now, I can only answer my friend with – YES, asthma can be inherited.
