Childhood Asthma

Today, asthma is known as one of the most rampant and leading severe constant and very persistent illness of many children in the U.S. In fact, it was recorded that in the year 2006, there was an estimated number of 6.7 million children (children from the ages of 18 and below) that currently have asthma. Out of those 6.7 million, 4.2 million of those are suffering from chronic asthma attacks.

Based from these numbers, it has been recorded that the year 2006 was the year with the highest occurrence rate of asthma in children. Even the children between the ages of 5 to 17 have asthma. Because of this, asthma has been regarded as the forth main cause of the hospitalization of many children. If children are not sent to the hospital because of asthma, they become absent in school more often. Many children become absent from schools because of asthma. These children miss the precious education they can get from school. The knowledge that should have received if they were able to go to school and attend their classes was received by someone else, another person perhaps. When will stop?

Even though studies and many years of scientific research can still not find a single cure for asthma, asthma can be controlled. Like a lion that can be tamed or a pet dog that can be trained new tricks, the symptoms of asthma can be set to mild levels and they can be controlled. One can be only be thankful to God because of this. You can control your life and control asthma. Childhood asthma can also be controlled. With the help of helpful doctors, dedicated parents, and cooperative children, the number of days of absenteeism from school and the head count of children sent to hospitals because of asthma can be lessened.

Yes, it is a fact that asthma has no cure yet, but it most certainly and almost always can be controlled. How will you do this? You better talk to your children and make them understand why they are often short of breath, why they feel their chest tighten at times, when they cough for no good reason at all. Treatment should be done and medicine should be given.

You can paint a picture to kids with child asthma how a normal lung function and how their lungs inflicted by asthma function. The lungs as a respiratory organ allow oxygen to go to the body. Like how a visitor enters through your front door, oxygen enters the body. And in return to the oxygen’s entrance, carbon dioxide is released by the lungs as a waste product. This is how the lungs of a normal child, a child without asthma, work day to day. Now, the child with asthma has inflammation in the bronchial tubes. This inflammation triggers and affects the normal passage of air. The tubes and the lungs become over-reactive and sometimes they function excessively. Mucus is released there is way too much muscle contraction going on in the lungs that cause difficulties in breathing among children.
