Abdominal pain and swelling is discomfort in the stomach and a feeling of distension. Pain may be “colicky” i.e. a pain every few minutes as muscular spasm occurs, if part of the intestine is inflamed.
Symptoms that may occur with it are diarrhoea, gastric upset/irritation, heartburn, indigestion, rumbling noises in the stomach, vomiting, weight loss and wind (belching and flatulence).
Possible foods and drinks that trigger abdominal pain and swelling are beer, tea, avocado, banana, beetroot, blackberries, carrot, celery, cheese, chick pea, chocolate, corn, egg, fish, gooseberries, kiwi fruit, mango, milk, oats, orange, pea, peach, peanuts, peppers, pineapple, pork, redcurrant, rhubarb, rye, shellfish, soya, spinach, strawberry and wheat. It might be triggered by some food additives like preservatives, emulsifiers/stabilizers/thickeners and flavour enhancers.
Treatment:
Aromatheraphy
Use one of the following oils as a compress with a hot water bottle placed on top (use 6 drops of essential oil in 500ml hot water, dip a cloth into it and wring it out, then lay the cloth on the effected area until it has cooled to body temperature), or massage your stomach (using one drop of essential oil to 5 ml of a carrier oil such as sweet almond): lavender, Roman camomile.
Herbal Remedies
Teas (use 1-2 teaspoon of dried herb to one cup of boiling water, steeped for 10-15 minutes): camomile, ginger, peppermint.
Homeopathic Remedies
Magnesium phosphoricum – for cramping abdominal pain.
Self-help Tips:
A hot water bottle placed across the abdomen may help. Also a milky drink or live yoghurt may sooth the stomach.
